A president of a large company
Told his success story to people.

어느 큰 회사의 사장이 성공한
이야기를 들려주는 날이었다.


There were many employees and journalists present.
A reporter asked the president about his secret of success,

직원들과 많은 취재진이 모인 가운데
어느 한 기자가 성공비결에 대해 질문을 했다.


“What is the secret of your success?
Could you tell us your story about
How you became so rich?
Have you ever thought about giving up in the middle?”

"당신은 어떻게 성공하실 수 있었죠?
그렇게 큰 부자가 될 수 있었던
이야기도 들려주시면 감사하겠습니다.
아! 그리고 포기하고 싶진 않았던가요?"


The president smiled
Listening to his question and answered,

그 말을 듣고 있던 사장이
여유로운 미소를 지으며 천천히 입을 떼었다.


“Giving up?
In Korean, “giving up” is “pogi”.
Koreans also say “pogi” when we count Korean cabbages
For me, I use that word only when I count cabbages.”

"'포기'라고요?
내 인생에 '포기'라는 말은 배추를
셀 때에만 필요한 말이랍니다."


People burst into laugh
Nodding their heads.

일순간 강연회 장에는 한바탕 웃음이 번졌고,
많은 사람들이 고개를 끄덕거렸다.


It was an event that reminded people that
When we fail, it is not the end
But when we give up, it is the end once and for all.

인생은 실패했을 때 끝나는 것이 아니라
포기했을 때 끝나는 것임을 일깨워주는 자리였다.
